The garden fairies have been really busy making changes to their home in Pine Hollow this spring. When they last made an appearance on
October 12th, they were out sledding and enjoying an early snowfall before sealing themselves up in their home in the Pine Lady for the long cold winter. I don't think they realized
last June when they first moved into my Minnesota garden how long and hard our winters really are
(so hard in fact that Winky, the columbine did not survive the winter). This past winter made them realize they needed more light and sunshine so the first project I spied them working on was a new window addition to their home. Now they can enjoy watching and feeding the birds all year and the winter rays of sunshine will warm their home.
Additional changes I see are the stream is now edged with boulders to help contain the "flooding" caused by birds and large dog paws and the gazebo has a new stone veneer and a painted roof.
Lots of gravel has been shoveled into paths...
leading up to a new summer cottage.
I was happy to see that with all this building, shoveling and raking they are like me and easily distracted into sitting and watching the birds (oops, notice my rake & shovel in the background).
When the mulch on sale has "log" sized chunks of wood in it - it is no wonder this little raker needed a rest.
The summer cottage is bright and whimsical with little vining flowers covering the trim and windows. I can see many tea parties being held on that patio once they get a table built.

Last summer, Pine Hollow became kind of hidden in the overgrowth so this year I am going to keep the larger plants surrounding the perimeter and will be on the lookout for some smaller and shorter plants to grow within their park like setting. Any suggestions?

I have been looking for items to do a fairy garden, not luck so far. I love Pine Hollow and think some ground covering sedum would be perfect for the fairies to play on..
Blogger wouldn't let me comment when you first posted, so finally I get to tell you how adorable your fairy garden is! My your fairies are quite industrious! Their stream is adorable too!
Bachman's has a ton of plants for fairy gardens, I usually just go load up my cart with what they have to offer for the summer. I struggle with the same problem, plants over growing my fairy garden. I do like a lot of the "stepables"- thyme, scotch moss, irish moss, they provide some green but don't take over.

Oh, Marsha, how cute your little Pine Hollow is becoming! I especially like how you've done the masonry around the doors.
How about iris crostata? It only grows about 6-8 inches high and will be blooming here in a couple of weeks. There are also some pretty low-growing sedums like Angelina and the new petite monarda is also very nice, about 8-10".
Your fairy village is so cute (but not as cute as Hershey, in my opinion!)
Oh I am so in love with your little fairy land. Love the improvements that have been made. The river is my fave and I just know I will have to copy but in more miniature fashion since my space is going to be very very tiny. I'd love to see a close up of that green topped toadstool thingy near the river. I think Hershey in the background is funny. Its like he is the giant in the land of Lilliputians. Your pink and green cottage is so perfect. Love love love it all. Did you make the lattice trellis or buy it..I"m full of questions I know. And the bridge..did you make that? Love it all Marsha.
