After a hot and humid weekend it felt good to get out in the garden this morning. With a little breeze, it helped keep those biting flies off me too!
This morning I saw an oriole admiring a spider web, a robin eating grape jelly and a bluejay having a chat with a fairy poolside.
I discovered the first blooms on the lollipop lily and the early orangish/red ones are still blooming as well.
Speaking of orange...mornings are the best time to admire the fish as they swim around trying to push the eggs out of the females against the pots and foam islands.
More new blossoms are sweet william, bachelor buttons and my new dwarf delphinium, "summer cloud".
Another thing I enjoy is watching mother wren feed her young. She's been catching moths, caterpillars and other bugs one after another all weekend.
I never tire of looking at the clematis vines in my garden. The white is Huldine mixed with dark reddish purple Niobe, pink Ville de Lyon and red Rebecca.
As I mentioned in part 2 of my week in review, Hawk Creek is full from all the rain. Jeff figures that is the reason this big snapping turtle made it's way up to the garden.
I tried to "shoo" it off the driveway but it just snapped when I got too close - Hershey almost got bit a few times when she wouldn't leave it alone.
Looking at it up close it almost looks prehistoric, like it is a leftover of the dinosaur age.
Jeff came home and tried to scoop it up and haul it back out to the fields. He fought the shovel and ended upside down for a second but righted himself really fast.
Finally, we got it on the shovel and out to the corn field and hopefully after his experience with 2 dogs he'll stay off the yard in the future.
